Mark Carney Must Disclose His Conflicts Before Election
Ottawa, ON – Michael Barrett, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government, released the following statement:
“For the last two months Mark Carney has been doing everything he can to hide his financial assets and conflicts of interest from Canadians.
“Not only has he refused to be transparent but he has lied to Canadians, most notably when he claimed to have no involvement in Brookfield moving their headquarters from Canada to the United States, despite being Chair when the unanimous decision was made by his board. In his lie, he has demonstrated to Canadians that he can’t be trusted.
“In the past week he has raised even more questions, with a changing story on his massive conflicts of interest. When speaking to media in the United Kingdom mere days ago, he claimed that he had no conflicts of interest, and yet when asked on Monday, he admitted that he did in fact have serious conflicts that he privately identified to the Ethics Commissioner.
“Mark Carney must finally come clean with both the media and the Canadian people. He knows the conflicts he has, he knows the financial interests that he holds, and he has millions of dollars in assets from his former company Brookfield. If Mark Carney has nothing to hide, then he will immediately release all this information to Canadians ahead of the coming election.
“Carney has endless excuses on why he’s failing to be transparent with Canadians but one thing is clear, there’s nothing in the law that prevents him from publishing information for all eyes to see. He’s making a deliberate choice to hide this information from Canadians.
“Canadians deserve the truth, they deserve to know the conflicts Carney has and they deserve to know what personal interests he has that go against Canada’s national interests.
“Carney must fully disclose all of his conflicts of interest and all his financial assets NOW!”
