Jagmeet Singh calls for help for workers; Steelworkers back NDP ahead of election call « Canada’s NDP

HAMILTON – Today, following an endorsement of Jagmeet Singh and the NDP by the United Steelworkers union (USW), Jagmeet Singh called for immediate action to help workers and their families.

“Mark Carney has time to meet with the King, to cut taxes for millionaires, and to dodge Canadians’ questions about his personal wealth. But when it comes to action that supports workers facing pink slips and rising costs, he is nowhere to be seen,” said Singh. “Workers need immediate action.

“Employment Insurance needs to be improved right now to better support workers; and procurement rules need to prioritize buying Canadian and building Canadian. Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre are focused on helping CEOs while workers get left behind.”

“New Democrats have always had workers’ backs,” said Singh. “In the face of Donald Trump’s attacks, we will fight even harder to make sure that the people who build our country are protected from predatory billionaires and corporations who rake in profits while laying off workers and increasing the cost of everything. That’s what this election is about and I’m deeply honoured to fight alongside—and on behalf—of the USW and working people all across Canada.”

The endorsement comes on the heels of Trump’s sweeping 25 per cent tariffs already in place on steel and aluminum, and more tariffs expected on April 2nd. It also follows Singh’s commitment to a massive, job-creating public infrastructure program, and his promise to make changes to Employment Insurance to help workers affected by tariffs keep working and keep putting food on the table.

“In this election, under Trump’s chaotic tariff threats and trade war, we need real solutions that will make a difference in people’s lives. We need a champion who will be there for us. In this election, there is only one choice for workers – Jagmeet Singh and the NDP’s team of candidates,” said Marty Warren, USW National Director.

The NDP’s Workers for Canada plan will:

  1. Fix EI so workers don’t lose their homes and livelihoods.
  2. Create jobs by investing in infrastructure and using Canadian resources.
  3. Protect Canadian industries from foreign takeovers and outsourcing.
  4. Expand trade beyond the U.S. while raising labour and environmental standards.

Thousands of USW members will be knocking on doors and making calls to help elect NDP candidates across the country.
