Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council
Full Name: Jo Petty
Medium: Oils, acrylics, watercolours.
How long have you been doing your art: For over 40 years.
What got you originally interested in the art you do: I was looking for a safer way to use oil paint. Research and investigation led me to dry pigments mixed with walnut oil and cold wax medium.
What is something you have learned about yourself through your art: I value the relationships that are made through teaching art and doing art. Watching people discover themselves through painting is a gift for me. I really love working with children. Their energy is so infectious and free.
What do you enjoy the most about your art: The biggest reward is watching people respond to the art. I love the seemingly negative responses. It means that the viewer was engaged with the piece, and they felt comfortable enough to give their honest response. I learn a lot from those comments and or compliments.
What is your favourite joke/quote: Every child is an artist ~ Pablo Piccaso
If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, and why: I would love to teach people how to use and make their own paints.
What do you think makes art important: There is an emotional impact that the arts have on every single person. Whether you create it or view it doesn’t matter. It’s how you ‘feel’ that matters.
Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council: I believe in the importance of the arts in Kamloops and the surrounding area. Being a member of the Kamloops Arts Council keeps me connected to the region and beyond.
