BC NDP MLA Harwinder Sandhu says stronger community services coming to Vernon
VERNON– BC NDP MLA Harwinder Sandhu says people living in Vernon will have better access to essential community services, thanks to funding for capital projects that help not-for-profit organizations improve and expand their facilities and programs.
“Funding for the Canadian Mental Health Association will not only renovate a space with essential resources for youth in downtown Vernon but will also support local jobs and will provide safe place for youth receiving these supports,” said Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Lumby. “Our government knows the value of local, on-the-ground organizations. It’s great that we can support projects across the province that help make our communities stronger.”
In Vernon, the Vernon and District Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is receiving $250,000 towards a renovation project for a new building to create a public space for youth to easily access the care, services and resources they need. Additionally, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club will receive $14,585 for structural repairs to the centre’s day lodge.
Across BC, 54 capital projects are receiving a total of $5 million through the Community Gaming Grants program. The grants allow non-profit organizations to acquire essential equipment or undertake renovations.

- Community Gaming Grants also fund projects and initiatives in the arts and culture, sports, human and social services, public safety, and environmental conservation sectors, as well as parent and district parent advisory councils in B.C. schools.
- The Community Gaming Grants program distributes up to $140 million each year.
- Program funds are provided from general revenues via provincial commercial gambling revenue in partnership with the BC Lottery Corporation.
