OTTAWA – On Wednesday, the NDP demanded that Mark Carney come clean about his role in Brookfield Corporation’s rampant tax dodging including its work offshore that involved tax avoidance in Canada.

Brookfield Corporation, which, according to experts, “may claim the title of Canada’s top tax dodger,” allegedly avoided paying billions in corporate taxes.

According to a 2021 report, Canada loses as much as $30 billion per year to corporate tax avoidance. NDP critic for Tax Fairness Niki Ashton said that money could have been invested in building affordable housing Canadians desperately need, fixing health care and lowering costs for Canadians.

“Canadians are facing tough times and yet Canadian workers pay their taxes, while wealthy big corporations in Canada continue to avoid paying theirs,” said Ashton. “Justin Trudeau’s likely successor, Mark Carney, was the Chairman at Brookfield Corporation—a company known for dodging their taxes. He must come clean on his role in Brookfield’s exploitative practices to dodge paying their taxes in Canada while working Canadians pay theirs.

“Brookfield and other corporations have taken advantage of loopholes and offshore havens to dodge paying their fair share—loopholes that have been maintained by Conservative and Liberal governments. Pierre Poilievre has no plan to make billionaires pay their fair share—instead he will cut Canadians’ dental care and services to give more to the ultrawealthy.”

Ashton emphasized the need to strengthen Canada’s capacity to go after the rich and corporations who engage in tax avoidance. A stronger Canada is possible through fair taxation.
