Mark Carney Lied
Ottawa, ON – Michael Barrett, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Québec Lieutenant, released the following statement:
“Last night, sneaky Mark Carney lied to Canadians, saying his financial firm Brookfield only moved their headquarters from Canada to New York City after he resigned from the board on January 16.
“But a Brookfield press release dated October 31, 2024 announced the decision to move the headquarters from Canada to New York City.
“And Conservatives have obtained a letter dated December 1, 2024, that Mark Carney himself sent to Brookfield’s shareholders. This letter shows that Carney personally voted for and recommended that Brookfield move from Canada to New York City – Donald Trump’s hometown. At that point, not only had Carney not stepped down from the board yet, but Trudeau had not resigned, triggering the leadership, and Chrystia Freeland hadn’t even resigned yet as Finance Minister.
“In fact, Brookfield’s board, of which Mark Carney was Chair, ‘unanimously determined’ the move, taking jobs away from Canadians. On top of this, Carney’s recommendation to move jobs out of Canada occurred just five days after Donald Trump first threatened Canada with unfair and unjustified tariffs.
“Mark Carney himself recommended the change, writing that ‘there is more we can do to broaden our shareholder base and gain access to the deepest pools of capital. The most common feedback that we hear from investors encourages us to position [Brookfield] for inclusion in some of the most widely followed global large cap stock indices, including in the U.S.’
“Despite this, Carney claimed yesterday that he had no role in Brookfield’s move and that it only happened ‘after I ceased to be on the board. I do not have a connection with Brookfield Asset Management. No longer have a role, obviously, as I resigned in the middle of January.’
“Sneaky Mark Carney has lied and been caught red-handed. This is yet more proof that Mark Carney cannot be trusted to tell the truth about his financial interests and potential conflicts. He must immediately and fully disclose all financial interests.
“Carney keeps claiming that he’s all in for Canada. He’s not. He’s all in for himself. If Carney wins, Canada loses. Only Pierre Poilievre and Common Sense Conservatives will put Canada First.”
