NDP-Liberals’ Dangerous Catch And Release Has Made Canada Unsafe
Ottawa, ON – Larry Brock, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada, released the following statement:
“The NDP-Liberals’ insane catch-and-release policies are making Canadians unsafe. This was clear from a Toronto Police Service report which revealed that they had arrested a criminal with 146 outstanding charges, who had dozens of victims, but was allowed out on bail anyway.
“Despite promising Canadians they would reform their dangerous catch-and-release policies, the NDP-Liberal Government is still putting violent, repeat offenders back into our communities. Savi Phillip, who was arrested earlier this month in a fraud investigation, was also found to be in possession of a deadly, illegal gun. But before this arrest, Phillip held a long track record of robbery, theft and assault.
“Phillip should never have been allowed back onto our streets. In the words of the Toronto Police Association, ‘How many chances do repeat offenders get?’ The NDP-Liberals’ stubborn refusal to get rid of catch and release makes it ‘obvious the federal government doesn’t care about your safety.’
“After nine years, NDP-Liberal catch-and-release policies have been a disaster for Canada’s public safety. Since the NDP-Liberals passed Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, which gave high priority to releasing repeat violent offenders and took away mandatory jail time for certain violent crimes, a crime wave has been unleashed across the country. Violent crime has increased by 50 percent, violent gun crime has increased by 116 percent, and 256 people were killed in 2022 by a criminal who was out on bail or another form of release.
“The Toronto Police Association also said to ‘ask those running to be your next Prime Minister what their plan is to stop repeat offenders from victimizing our community.’ But Mark Carney has refused to say that he’ll end this dangerous approach to violent crime. And the NDP-Liberal Justice Minister even tried to gaslight Canadians by saying this crime wave only existed in Canadians’ heads.
“Only Common Sense Conservatives have a plan to bring home safe streets for Canadians by ending the revolving door justice system and giving violent repeat offenders jail, not bail.”
