Liberals Must Put Canada First And Bring Back Parliament

Ottawa, ON – Canada is facing a crisis, but the Liberal Party has shut down our Parliament. President Trump has put a 28-day pause on his tariffs, but nothing can be taken for granted. There is no time for rest. Canada must take back control of our border, strengthen our economy and put Canada First.

Parliament was set to return on Monday, January 27. But because of the Liberals’ self-serving actions, Parliament will not meet for another 7 weeks – well after President Trump’s March 4 deadline.

“Instead of putting aside their narrow partisan interests, the Liberal Government has persisted in keeping Parliament shuttered as they focus on their own leadership race,” said Michael Barrett, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics. “As they so often do, Liberals are putting party over country.”

It is inconceivable that a proud, strong democracy should have its national legislature closed at such a pivotal time. Members of Parliament are getting paid and should be at work dealing with the crisis, debating and considering responses. Even the Liberals’ own border plan announced on December 17 acknowledges that legislative changes are required – which cannot occur without Parliament’s approval.

“Conservatives have consistently called for Parliament’s immediate return, and continue to do so. All Members of Parliament should call for Parliament’s immediate return, as should all aspiring Liberal leadership contenders,” added Barrett.

Conservatives stand ready to work and have proposed our Canada First Plan and our plan to secure the border. Canadians deserve a working Parliament and a competent government with a strong mandate to deliver our country through this crisis.

Only Common Sense Conservatives will put Canada First – now and always.
