Green Party of Canada Condemns $20 Billion Public Loan for TMX

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is calling out the Liberal government for quietly approving yet another $20 billion loan for the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline, breaking their promise not to provide further public funding for the project. This latest subsidy, which was only made public on January 30 despite being dated December 13, brings the total amount of taxpayer money funneled into TMX to a staggering $50 billion.

“This is an appalling betrayal of the public trust,” said Leader Elizabeth May. “The Liberals explicitly promised that no more public funds would go to TMX. Instead, they are forcing Canadians to foot the bill for a failing project that threatens our climate, our environment, and our economy.”

The Green Party is also drawing attention to the wider pattern of government support for the fossil fuel industry, with the federal government providing a total of $28.5 billion in financial support to oil and gas in 2024 alone—despite Canada’s international commitments to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.

“This is what climate failure looks like,” said MP Mike Morrice. “At a time when Canadians are struggling with an affordability crisis and extreme weather events fueled by the climate emergency, our government is handing billions more to a project that should never have been built. Instead of investing in a clean energy future, they are doubling down on a dying industry.”

The timing of this announcement is particularly troubling, coming as industry lobbyists and pro-oil politicians push for even more pipeline expansion, using Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats as an excuse. The Green Party warns that TMX should serve as a cautionary tale for governments and taxpayers alike.

“This is exactly why we cannot give in to Big Oil’s demands,” added Elizabeth May. “TMX has been a financial and an ecological disaster from the start, and now Canadians are paying the price. If we continue down this path, we risk even more reckless spending on projects that will soon be stranded assets.”

The Green Party is calling for full transparency from the Liberal government regarding the new TMX loan, as well as an immediate commitment to end all public subsidies for fossil fuel projects. Canadians deserve leadership that prioritizes climate action and economic resilience—not another blank cheque for polluters.
