New Democrats in Detroit to meet with progressive American legislator in the face of Trump tariff threat « Canada’s NDP

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – Four members of the New Democratic Party caucus were in Detroit, Michigan today and met with Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan’s 12th Congressional District, whose constituency shares the Canada-US border with the city of Windsor, Ontario.

The four New Democrat MPs are Brian Masse, MP for Windsor West and NDP critic for Canada-US Border Relations, Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona), NDP critic for Foreign Affairs, NDP House Leader and Health critic Peter Julian (Burnaby–New Westminster), and NDP National Defence Critic Lindsay Mathyssen (London Fanshawe).

“With the growing uncertainty and threat of Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods, we need to ensure we’re working with progressive friends in the United States who share our concerns about the effect of a trade war on working people on both sides of the border,” said McPherson. “Trump’s dangerous views aren’t those of many American people – and we are stronger when progressives stand united against Trump’s attacks on workers.”

“People in Windsor West have strong ties to people in Representative Tlaib’s district,” said Masse. “One third of our cross-border trade goes through our two constituencies – and all our residents will be hurt by Trump’s tariffs. We are grateful our friends across the border stand in solidarity with Canadian workers too.”

Earlier today, the NDP MPs were in Windsor, Ontario, along the border with the United States, meeting with Canadian workers who will be affected by Trump’s planned 25 per cent tariffs on products from Canada.
