Liberals comment on upcoming leadership race – January 8, 2025

Ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters following a caucus meeting on Parliament Hill. This is the Liberals’ first caucus meeting since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his intention to step down as prime minister and Liberal leader once his party has chosen a new leader.

Minister François-Philippe Champagne (innovation) confirms that he is in fact considering a run for party leadership. Also facing questions on the way forward for the selection of a new party leader are ministers Jonathan Wilkinson (natural resources), Steven Guilbeault (environment), Jean-Yves Duclos (public services) and Steven MacKinnon (labour) as well as MPs Stéphane Lauzon, Jennifer O’Connell, Joël Lightbound, Chris Bittle, Taleeb Noormohamed, Brenda Shanahan, Yasir Naqvi and Charles Sousa.
