Green Party of Canada Raises Concerns Over Federal Government’s Pattern of Intervening in Labour Disputes

December 13, 2024 at 3:13 pm  Federal, Politics

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is deeply concerned about the federal government’s directive to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board, ordering Canada Post workers back to work and extending their existing collective agreement until May 2025. This intervention reflects an alarming pattern: the Liberals claim to support fair bargaining but repeatedly undermine the process through direct interference.

This marks the third instance this year where the Liberal government has stepped in to end labour actions prematurely. Despite assurances from federal officials that “the best deals happen at the table,” this pattern suggests otherwise. How can workers trust a government that does not keep its word?

Labour unions have a long history of advancing workers’ rights, improving wages, securing safer working conditions, and promoting fairness. These gains have strengthened Canada’s economy and society as a whole. The right to strike and engage in collective bargaining is fundamental to this progress, and it must be respected.

The Green Party of Canada stands firmly with workers and the unions that represent them. We urge the federal government to stop this pattern of intervention and allow collective bargaining to proceed in good faith, as promised.

Now more than ever, Canadians need a government that respects workers’ rights and lives up to its commitments to protect them.
