
Liberals comment on first ministers’ meeting on Trump tariff threats – December 11, 2024
Ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting. Ministers Jean-Yves Duclos (public services), Mary Ng (trade) and Marc Miller (immigration) as well as MPs Mona Fortier, Rob Oliphant, Sean Casey, Vince Badawey and Darrell Samson face questions on Canada-U.S. relations and tonight’s meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and premiers on U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
Ministers Arif Virani (justice) and Duclos as well as MPs Chris Bittle, Anthony Housefather, Shafqat Ali, Salma Zahid comment on two new House of Commons justice committee reports on antisemitism and Islamophobia in Canada.
Minister Chrystia Freeland (finance) discusses the Bank of Canada’s decision to lower its overnight rate to 3.25 per cent from 3.75 per cent.
Minister Karina Gould (government House leader) and MPs Adam van Koeverden and Marcus Powlowski comment on the way forward for the minority Liberal government’s proposed $250 rebate cheques, a policy which has failed to garner the support of any of the opposition parties.
Gould also faces questions on negotiations with opposition parties to end the ongoing debate over a Conservative privilege motion that continues to stall work in the House of Commons.
