NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) made the following statement:

“Today, on International Human Rights Day, New Democrats reaffirm our unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and dignity for all. Seventy-six years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world faces escalating crises that demand urgent action to ensure human rights are upheld.

Over this past year, millions of people around the world, including in Gaza, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine have experienced horrific human right abuses at the hands of authoritarians, corrupt governments, and armed groups. Respected human rights organizations have determined that the violence and destruction in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine amount to genocide.

These crises abroad reflect a broader global erosion of human rights. However, Canada is not immune to scrutiny. Systemic inequalities persist at home. The epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people remains a national crisis. Decades of government neglect have left Indigenous communities without access to clean drinking water, adequate health care and infrastructure.

New Democrats stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice around the world. The courage of human rights defenders inspires us to hold the Liberal government accountable.

Canada must lead by example—committing to bold, tangible actions that reflect the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This means ending complicity in human rights violations and genocide, supporting victims of war and oppression, and addressing systemic inequalities at home.

Human rights are promised to all people, regardless of borders, politics, or beliefs. Today, and every day, let us renew our commitment to building a world where freedom, equality, and dignity are enjoyed by everyone.”
