The Confederacy Of Treaty Six First Nations Call On Trudeau To Axe The Carbon Tax

Ottawa, ON – Tomorrow, the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations will present a motion at the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly, calling for support in their legal action against Justin Trudeau’s unfair carbon tax that has made everything more expensive.

After nine years, the NDP-Liberal carbon tax has impoverished Canadians. One in four kids are going hungry with food prices rising 36 percent faster in Canada than it has in the United States. Food banks are having to handle millions of visits every single month.

During a press conference today in Ottawa, members of the Indian Resource Council of Canada also said “We will not stand by while our communities are pushed further into poverty by the tax we never agreed to.”

They also “dispel[led] any notion that lower-income First Nations are better off with the carbon tax rebate.”

Despite multiple challenges from Premiers and First Nations leaders to axe the tax, Trudeau and Sellout Singh have joined forces to quadruple the carbon tax to 61 cents per litre on the backs of First Nations communities and Canadian families.

Last year, the Chiefs of Ontario announced they were launching a judicial review of Justin Trudeau’s punishing carbon tax, saying it was an unfair policy that was hurting their communities. And earlier this year, First Nations across Canada passed a resolution to join that call. Now, the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations have also asked the Assembly of First Nations to support their own legal challenge, in order to give their communities some relief from Trudeau’s cost-of-living crisis.

As the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Cindy Woodhouse, said “From what I’m hearing, [the carbon tax is] going to hurt our people. We should have a proper legal strategy on that, as well as a political lens on it.”

Instead of ignoring First Nations and Canadian families, the NDP-Liberal government must axe their inflationary carbon tax and give people the relief they deserve. Only Common Sense Conservatives will end Trudeau’s economic vandalism and bring home a government that listens to First Nations by ending Trudeau’s Ottawa-knows-best approach.
