NDP marks Transgender Day of Remembrance « Canada’s NDP

Canada’s NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, made the following statement:

“Today, we come together to remember the two-spirit, trans and gender-diverse people who have lost their lives to devastating acts of anti-trans violence. Every person lost was a person who mattered, whose contributions are missed, and who leaves a hole in their family, chosen family and community.

New Democrats envision a future where everyone can live as their authentic self without facing hate, discrimination and violence. But Canada still has a lot of work to do to make that a reality. The annual Transgender Day of Remembrance is one of mourning, and it’s also an occasion to reflect on the strength of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and recommit to action to protect trans lives. Transgender Canadians —especially trans women and trans women of colour—continue to disproportionately face horrific hate, abuse and violence; and governments in Canada and around the world are revealing anti-trans agendas that stoke division and make trans people, including children, less safe.

Trans rights are human rights, and New Democrats stand with 2SLBGTQIA+ communities to fight to protect trans lives. Together, we can build a more inclusive, affirming and safe Canada.”
