2SLGBTQIA+ critic Randall Garrison and deputy critic Blake Desjarlais made the following statement:

“This week is an important time for us all to come together and reflect on the hard-fought battles of trans people to get the rights and respect they deserve. It’s also an important time for all of us to learn more about what needs to be done to make sure everyone is safe and secure and can be who they are without fear or discrimintation.

This Transgender Awareness Week, New Democrats urge everyone to join us and members of the trans community in our commitment to make Canada a better place for everyone.

It’s more important than it’s ever been for us to come together and support one another. With hate and division spreading through Canada and with Conservative premiers stoking the flames, we need to stand up and fight back.

We’re seeing Conservative premiers restrict health care access and education and especially going after kids with hate and fear when they should be met with love and support.

As Canadians, we’ve always prided ourselves on being inclusive and kind and creating a country where everyone is accepted.

On Transgender Awareness Week, New Democrats are calling for better from our political leaders. The government needs to protect two-spirit, trans and gender-diverse people – making sure they can get the health care and the support they need.”
