Statement by Bea Bruske on the Passing of John Horgan

Today, we mourn the loss of John Horgan, the 36th Premier of British Columbia and a true champion of fairness and equality. John’s leadership was defined by his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of everyday people.

Throughout his career, John fought tirelessly for workers’ rights, believing deeply in the power of collective action and the pursuit of justice. His legacy is one of remarkable achievements: removing big money from politics, developing a forward-thinking climate strategy and promoting reconciliation by upholding the rights of First Nations in economic development initiatives.

But John’s contributions go beyond policy. He revitalized the BC NDP, forging a resilient party with optimistic members that not only won elections but inspired hope for a better future.

His leadership during times of immense challenge — from a pandemic to devastating wildfires and floods — earned him the trust and respect of British Columbians and of people from all over Canada.

John Horgan will be remembered not only for what he accomplished but for how he led: with integrity, compassion, and a steadfast belief in doing what’s right. His passion for building a fairer society will continue to inspire generations to come.

History will remember John kindly, and we are forever grateful for his vision and dedication. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Rest in peace, John. You will be deeply missed.
