Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Small Business Week

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Small Business Week:

“This week, we celebrate the backbone of our economy. Small businesses employ nearly half of all private sector workers, and make incredible contributions to our country from coast to coast to coast.

“The neighbourhood diner where families gather on Saturday morning. The construction company that sponsors the local hockey team. The innovative startup that brings powerful paycheques for hard-working young people. These are not ‘just’ businesses, but part of the fabric of our communities.

“Any small business owner can tell you about the sacrifices this involves. The long hours, often on evenings and weekends, spent making calls and dealing with clients or suppliers. Or pouring over spreadsheets to find the money to give their employees a raise – or just to fix the company truck.

“As Canadians, entrepreneurship is in our DNA. Our history is one of intrepid pioneers who came from across oceans and continents to farm their own land and own their own business. Throughout our history, we have attracted the most talented and ambitious people from all over the globe. Self-starters who came here knowing that it didn’t matter who their parents were or what connections they had: if they worked hard and played by the rules, they too could succeed in Canada. After all, small business’ success is Canada’s success.

“Sadly, many Canadians feel that work no longer pays.

“That’s why a Poilievre government will axe the carbon tax that harms our small businesses. We will create a country where hard work that creates value is rewarded, not punished with taxes that hurt future generations. Together, we will build a Canada that works for the people who do the work.

“On behalf of Canada’s Common Sense Conservatives, I want to wish everyone a happy Small Business Week!”
