Canada’s NDP leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:

“Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is a profound time of reflection, repentance, and renewal. On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I would like to extend my best wishes to all members of the Jewish faith in Canada and around the world who are gathering to observe the holiest of Jewish Holidays.

This Yom Kippur arrives as Jewish communities mourn and grieve the precious lives lost in the October 7th terrorist attacks on Israel close to a year ago. This past year has been difficult for Jewish communities everywhere, including our neighbours and friends. Some families will fast and pray for a loved one who is still being held hostage.

The rise of antisemitic attacks on synagogues, schools, community centres and cemeteries have left families holding their loved ones close, reliving trauma that has echoed through generations.

To Jewish communities in Canada, New Democrats stand with you in the face of this hate and will fight by your side to eliminate it. No one in Canada should ever feel unsafe in the communities they live and love.

This special Day of Atonement is also a day of hope, compassion, and empathy, reminding us all of our shared Canadian values of generosity and sympathy for others. These ideals bring our communities together and enrich our country.

On this solemn holiday, we wish all Jewish Canadian families who are celebrating Yom Kippur an easy fast and a new year filled with peace and prosperity.

G’mar Chatima Tovah.”
