Liberals on Middle East conflict, Bloc demands for government – October 2, 2024

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting. The prime minister, Mélanie Joly (foreign affairs) and Bill Blair (defence) comment on the escalating situation in the Middle East and appeal for calm following Iran’s ballistic missile strikes against Israel.
Joly, Blair and MP Fayçal El-Khoury respond to questions on the worsening humanitarian conditions in Lebanon and on the federal government’s efforts to evacuate Canadian citizens from the country,
Karina Gould (government House leader), Steven MacKinnon (labour), Mark Holland (health), Randy Boissonnault (employment), Arif Virani (justice), François-Philippe Champagne (innovation), Soraya Martinez Ferrada (tourism), Pascale St-Onge (heritage), Jean-Yves Duclos (public services), Marc Miller (immigration) as well as MPs Marcus Powlowski and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith discuss the party’s position on the Bloc Quebecois’ demand to increase benefits to seniors as one of its two preconditions for supporting the minority Liberal government.
Miller and Duclos also take questions on Quebec Premier François Legault’s calls for the federal government to relocate half of the asylum seekers that are currently in the province.
Holland speaks as well on the development and implementation of the national pharmacare program.
