Ecuadorian Indigenous women bring mining concerns to Ottawa – October 2, 2024

At a news conference in Ottawa, four Indigenous women from Ecuador raise concerns over the environmental and human rights impacts of Canadian resource extraction projects in their country. Canada and Ecuador are currently engaged in negotiations for a free-trade agreement.

Speaking with reporters are Zenaida Yasacama (member of the Kichwa Ancestral People of Pakayaku and vice-president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador), Fanny Kaekat (leader of external communication for the Shuar Arutam People, community of Maikiuants, and member of Amazonian Women Defenders of the Forest), Hortencia Zhagüi (member of the Kimsakocha Women’s School of Agroecology and the Board of Potable Water Administrators of Victoria del Portete and Tarqui), and Ivonne Ramos (member of Acción Ecológica. They are joined by Ketty Nivyabandi (secretary general of Amnesty International Canada’s English-speaking section) and Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay (Bloc Québécois MP for Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot).
