NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) made the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats joins the Armenian community in Canada and around the world in celebrating the Republic of Armenia’s Independence Day.

For centuries, Armenian people have been resilient in the face of persecution and genocide. Their sovereignty and self-determination could not be more important at a time of global uncertainty.

The Armenian Genocide began in 1915, and we mourn the millions of lives that were lost as the world stayed silent. Canada was one of the first countries to recognize this genocide and we will continue to honour and remember all of the victims.

We continue to stand in solidarity with the Armenian people and support their efforts to maintain their democracy and independence.”
