NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“On this day in 2001, unthinkable, vile acts of murderous terrorism were committed against the United States. Today we remember and pay tribute to the thousands of Americans, including first responders, who lost their lives in the attack that shook the country and the world.

We also remember Americans, Canadians and others who stood together in solidarity, who showed strength in the face of evil, and showed kindness and empathy in response to crisis including Canadians who opened their homes as they hosted Americans left stranded by grounded flights, most famously in the Newfoundland town of Gander.

The National Day of Service is a day to commemorate that spirit by engaging in an act of service. The beautiful tradition started by our American neighbours is a fitting legacy that shows that love is stronger than hate.

Let us remember that as we strive for a world without terror.”
