Green Party Supports Teamsters, Asks the Government to Consider Nationalizing Canadian Railways
WINNIPEG – The Green Party of Canada (GPC) stands in solidarity with the Teamsters union, echoing their concerns regarding the recent decision by the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to order an end to work stoppages at Canadian Pacific (CP) and Canadian National Railway (CN). In response, GPC’s Labour Critic and Elmwood-Transcona by-election candidate Nic Geddert and GPC Leader Elizabeth May will host a Labour-focused press conference in Winnipeg on September 9, 2024, addressing these pressing issues.
The GPC denounces the dangerous precedent set by the CIRB’s decision, which undermines workers’ rights to strike and engage in collective bargaining. “This is a blow to workers’ rights in Canada, and we must stand with the Teamsters to defend fair treatment, safety, and dignity on the job,” said Leader Elizabeth May.
The nationalization of both CP and CNR must be considered. These railways were originally built with public funds to serve the public good. “These railways were made to move goods efficiently across the country and to support Canadian farmers, not to undermine and sabotage passenger services or operate solely for corporate profit,” Geddert explained. The Party’s vision is to return these vital transportation networks to their original purpose: serving the Canadian people.
“In conjunction with these calls, we urge the government to pass its private member’s bill, Bill C-236, which would give VIA Rail a statutory mandate and establish a legal framework for safe, efficient, and sustainable national public rail services,” said Nic Geddert. “This would ensure the long-term sustainability of VIA Rail as Canada’s national public rail passenger service provider.”
“Both the Liberals and the NDP failed to act on rail safety and public transportation legislation,” added Elizabeth May. “Specifically, Bill C-33, which has been left stagnant since late December 2023, represents a lack of commitment to improving rail safety and infrastructure.”
The Green Party remains committed to supporting Canadian workers, ensuring the future of sustainable public transportation, and addressing the critical infrastructure needs that will shape our country for generations. “It’s time to protect our workers and our national resources,” concluded Geddert.
