Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“It takes true courage to see a raging fire in a home or spreading through a forest and know that it is your duty to control the blaze. Firefighters know the risks they take to keep our homes and communities safe; and it’s our responsibility to do everything in our power to help them make it back home safely to their loved ones at the end of each emergency.

Firefighters save lives, and keep peoples’ livelihoods, homes, and memories safe from destruction.

The wildfire that tore through Jasper this summer is a stark reminder of how quickly and violently wildfires can hurt communities, economies and lives. Investing to ensure firefighters have the resources and equipment they need is an investment in all of us.

New Democrats thank every Canadian who has bravely stepped up to become a firefighter. We use this day to remember all who have fallen in the line of duty, and fight for a safer future for all.”
