Reality Check – Pierre Poilievre’s “extraordinary” ways to backstab workers « Canada’s NDP

On Labour Day, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is pretending to praise “extraordinary” workers. In fact, what’s extraordinary are the ways he consistently backstabs workers.

  • Poilievre kept workers poor by voting against minimum wages – TWICE.
  • Poilievre made workers work longer for their pensions by raising the retirement age from 65 to 67 when he was a cabinet minister—even though Poilievre qualified for a six-figure government pension when he turned 31.
  • He declared war on unions, announcing that he’s the “first federal politician to make a dedicated push toward bringing right-to-work laws to Canada.”
  • He spent $10 billion a year outsourcing public service work to third-party management firms while he was in cabinet.
  • He undermined workers and unions when he voted for back-to-work legislation EIGHT times.

“Pierre Poilievre dedicated his political career to undermining workers so that big bosses could take a bigger piece of the pie. Every single chance he’s had, he’s trampled on workers’ rights. He even stayed silent during the rail lockout because his former campaign manager John Baird is on CPKC’s Board of Directors,” said NDP Labour critic Matthew Green (Hamilton Centre).

“Poilievre can borrow a hard hat to play dress up for the camera, but he’s never spent a hot second standing with workers. If he gets a chance, he’ll cut deep and backstab fast, leaving workers further behind.”
