NANAIMO – People who use transit throughout the Nanaimo region will see improved service as a result of expanded BC Transit service, according to Sheila Malcolmson, BC NDP MLA for Nanaimo.

“The Nanaimo-Cowichan Express is a great option for people to get from one point to another in our region,” said Sheila Malcolmson, BC NDP MLA for Nanaimo. “This BC Transit expansion to increase additional trips in the evening will help keep people connected.”

To promote increased ridership and support the continued growth of Nanaimo, BC Transit is providing expanded service with support from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. In Nanaimo, this expansion means the increase of 500 more service hours annually, with the introduction of additional trips during evenings. 9400 additional hours of service are planned for January 2025 across Nanaimo transit lines, as well as exploration of adding service on Sundays and Mondays to the 99 Deep Bay route.

This investment in the local transit system ensures that public transit services can continue to offer dependable transportation options for people in Nanaimo.

The expanded service in Nanaimo is part of improved transit service in communities across B.C. To support communities and the increased demand for public transit, the Province is committing $298 million for new BC Transit system expansion. BC Transit is expanding systems to shape the growth of communities that will benefit from new routes, more buses and improved service.
