NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

Surrey Langley SkyTrain approaching major construction as demolitions begin along future alignment

SURREY – Site clearing to accommodate the future Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension has begun and will continue throughout the summer, marking the project’s next step towards major construction later this year.

“Once complete, this project is going to move more people, more quickly, every day, compared to the transit options people in these communities have right now,” said Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood. “This will benefit Surrey and Langley communities by providing faster and easier access to schools, jobs, services and, of course, friends and family.”

Demolition of existing structures, including utility disconnections, vegetation removal, and safe removal of hazardous materials will take place at several locations along Fraser Highway in the coming months. This includes the former Mr. Lube building at 15181 Fraser Highway in Surrey (site of the future 152 Street Station), where demolition began today and is expected to be complete by the end of the week, and the former ICBC building at 6000 Production Way in Langley City, expected to come down in late summer.

Other site clearing activities and preliminary works will continue throughout the summer, and single lane closures related to these works will continue intermittently at various locations along Fraser Highway.

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension is the first rapid transit expansion south of the Fraser in 30 years, and, along with the Broadway Subway Project, will increase the SkyTrain network by 28 per cent. Once complete, people throughout the region will be able to travel between Langley City and Surrey Centre in approximately 22 minutes, and between Langley and downtown Vancouver in just over an hour.
