Minister’s statement on World Drowning Prevention Day

Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, has released the following statement in recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day, July 25, 2024:

“Today, on World Drowning Prevention Day, I would like to remind everyone to take extra care around water to keep you and those you care about safe.

“The BC Coroners Service reported last year there were 101 accidental drowning deaths. Between 2013 and 2022, alcohol and drugs were found to be a contributing factor in 39% of drowning deaths. Avoiding alcohol and drug use while near water will go a long way to making for a fun and safe day for you, your friends and family.

“The report also showed a high number of drowning deaths for males, which accounted for 79%, and people age 19 to 29, which accounted for 20%. This information will help direct educational programs, including training for first responders, funding and research, and public prevention campaigns.

“Proper preparation can be the difference between a wonderful summer day or an avoidable tragedy. Steps you can take to prevent accidental drownings include: following boating laws and ensuring everyone wears a life-jacket; swimming with a friend; learning life-saving skills such as CPR and first aid; and being aware of your surroundings, such as water depth where large rocks are and following warning signs. Please remember to supervise young children around water and keep them within arm’s reach.

“Let us make the most of our province’s beautiful bodies of water this summer and renew our commitment to safeguarding lives through education, intervention and collaboration. By prioritizing drowning prevention we can ensure this summer is one of the best, especially for those enjoying our lakes, rivers and coastal waters.”
