BC NDP MLAs says grants will support local sports in Burnaby

BURNABY – BC NDP MLAs Katrina Chen, Raj Chouhan, Anne Kang and Janet Routledge say grants for local not-for-profit organizations will support sports organizations so that people can stay active and healthy in Burnaby.

“Local sports organizations offer many opportunities for growth, learning, and support for people of all ages,” says Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds. “I’m excited for sports teams all across Burnaby to continue to have fun, foster community, and stay active.”

Over $1.8 million in funding for 21 organizations in Burnaby is part of the $25 million in Community Gaming Grants that will be shared among 736 organizations that deliver sports programs or services across BC that will improve the quality of life in their communities.

“For many, participating in sports is a key aspect of a healthy life,” says Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “This funding supports amazing organizations in Burnaby that foster teamwork, resiliency, and health through sports.”

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Burnaby include:

  • $233,000 for BC School Sports.
  • $250,000 for British Columbia Blind Sports and Recreation Association
  • $170,200 for Volleyball BC

The Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations. These grants help approximately 5,000 organizations to deliver ongoing programs and services in their communities.
