NELSON – BC NDP MLAs Katrine Conroy and Brittny Anderson say that grants for local not-for-profit organizations will support sports organizations so that people can stay active and healthy in the Kootenays.

“Sports are an important part of so many peoples lives here in the Kootenays, and support for local sports associations has a big impact,” said Katrine Conroy, MLA for Kootenay-West. “Between athletes working hard, parents and coaches dedicating their time and energy or fans in the stands, sports touch so many people in our community, and I’m glad that we can support to the local people who do so much in the sector.”

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are going to organizations in the Kootenays as part of $25 million in Community Gaming Grants that will be shared among 736 organizations that deliver sports programs or services across BC that will improve the quality of life in their communities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in the Kootenays include:

  • Greater Trail Hockey Association – $64,500
  • Castlegar Skating Club – $20,000
  • Nelson Minor Hockey Association – $31,500
  • Creston Valley Youth Soccer Association – $10,000

“We are incredibly fortunate to have thriving sports associations in the Kootenays, providing activities during in all four seasons of the year,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “Whether it’s soccer, hockey, softball, skiing or our Special Olympics team, sports are a great way to support a healthy lifestyle and community. I’m grateful that our government provides support to so many vital local organizations.”

The Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations. These grants help approximately 5,000 organizations to deliver ongoing programs and services in their communities.
