VICTORIA – BC NDP MLAs Grace Lore and Rob Fleming say grants for local not-for-profits will support sports organizations so that people can stay active and healthy in Victoria.

“Investing in community sport is not only about helping people stay active but also about bringing people together” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “These grants will provide more opportunities for people in the sports community in Victoria and beyond to connect.”

$488,750 in funding for 14 organizations in Victoria is part of the $25 million in Ministry of Municipal Affairs Community Gaming Grants that will be shared among 736 organizations that deliver sports programs or services across BC that will improve the quality of life in their communities.

Organizations receiving funding in Victoria include:

  • $50,000 – Victoria Curling Club
  • $15,000 – Victoria Youth Paddling Club Society
  • $158,000 – Victoria Minor Hockey Association
  • $80,000 – Gorge Soccer Association
  • $26,000 – Hampton Little League Association
  • $15,000 – Gorge Narrows Rowing and Paddling Club
  • $3,000 – Victoria Aikikai Society

“Sports help create a sense of pride and community, and give people the opportunity to try new, exciting activities,” said Rob Fleming, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “By investing in our local sports organizations, we’re making sure that more people have a chance to come together as a community while staying active.”

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations. These grants help approximately 5,000 organizations to deliver ongoing programs and services in their communities.
