NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

MLA Anderson says protected bike lanes are coming to Nelson Bridge, thanks to provincial investment

NELSON – BC NDP MLA Brittny Anderson says people will have more options for walking, biking, and rolling as protected bike lanes and new sidewalks are being added to the Nelson Bridge.

“Championing active transportation in Nelson and across our region has been important to me since my time on Nelson City Council,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “I am thrilled to see this project move forward. Making it safer and more comfortable for cyclists and pedestrians to cross our Big Orange Bridge opens up more opportunities for people to commute or explore, whether you live here or are visiting the region.”

The province is providing funding for engineering to assess the feasibility for protected bicycle lanes and cantilevered sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.

The project will provide connectivity to the existing active transportation network, including the City of Nelson’s Cycling and Trail Network, the Trans-Canada Trail, and other recreational and commuter destinations on the north and south shore of Kootenay Lake.

Nine communities across B.C. are receiving provincial investments for active transportation projects, totaling over $85 million.

These projects will give people more options to get to school, work, or recreational activities safely, while staying active and enjoying the outdoors.

These latest investments from the Active Transportation Capital Fund are building on and creating expansion opportunities for projects funded through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant program earlier this year, which funded 80 projects worth $24 million.

These newly funded projects will help fill identified gaps in active transportation networks and build up networks across B.C. through collaboration with local governments and First Nations.
