BC NDP MLA Whiteside says funding will help seniors get services they need

NEW WESTMINSTER – New Democrat MLA Jennifer Whiteside is announcing continued funding for the Senior Housing Information and Navigation Ease (SHINE) program, with a $809,000 grant from the provincial government.

“SHINE provides a very important service by helping seniors to access housing, financial assistance, and mental health support,” said Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster. “For many seniors, the pressure of navigating multiple services and programs can be very overwhelming. This program helps alleviates that stress by connecting seniors with the services they need.”

The SHINE program, operated by the Seniors Services Society of B.C., facilitates timely access to and navigation of appropriate housing services and supports for seniors.

“We’re dedicated to making sure no senior is left behind,” says Alison Silgado, CEO, Senior Services Society of B.C. “SHINE not only helps seniors navigate critical systems like finance and housing and connects them to vital services, but also fosters community connections to combat loneliness and enhance their quality of life. This funding will enable us to expand our services and connect more seniors in their communities.”

The grant was provided by the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions as a fundamental part of A Pathway to Hope, B.C.’s roadmap to building a comprehensive system of mental-health and addiction care for British Columbians.
