NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“On behalf of all New Democrats, I want to wish the Filipino community, here in Canada and around the world, a happy Philippine Independence Day.

Filipino-Canadians have made an invaluable social, economic and cultural impact on Canadian society. These contributions deserve our recognition and respect.

Many Canadian Filipinos here in Canada are working hard as vital front-line workers, including in caregiving roles. These workers are often doing the important job of looking after our loved ones so that they can age with dignity and support. New Democrats, like B.C. MP Bonita Zarrillo, are fighting hard to make the federal government recognize this work by making the Canada Caregiver Credit a refundable tax benefit. This initiative would help get caregivers the benefit they deserve, and support their crucial work in our communities.

Today we celebrate with the Filipino community and recommit to strengthening and growing the connection between our countries. The Canadian government must further build this relationship with more trade, immigration, and recognition of Philippine cultural events like today.

I encourage Canadians from all backgrounds, from coast-to-coast-to-coast, to join in and celebrate the Philippines.

Mabuhay!”
