Wildfire expert Dr. Mike Flannigan says dry fuels can be found reaching a metre to a metre and a half in depth below the surface, which can lead to more wildfires overwintering and starting up again the following season. “So drought cause overwintering fires, which a couple of weeks ago many of them were spreading actively into unburned forest.” Read more
