NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

MLAs Malcolmson and Routley say funding will support Indigenous-led clean energy project

NANAIMO – New Democrat MLAs Sheila Malcolmson and Doug Routley say a local First Nation will be better able to meet their energy needs with funding for a clean energy project.

“Our BC team is funding sustainable solutions to help people face changing climates,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “These four new heat pumps will ensure Snuneymuxw’s administration building can be comfortable and safe for community members year-round.”

The Snuneymuxw First Nation is receiving $300,000 towards four new heat pumps to be installed in the Nation’s administrative building.

“After recent years of unpredictable weather, making buildings more heat resilient and climate friendly is key for the health of people and communities,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “I’m pleased we’re able to provide this support to the Snuneymuxw Nation to do this work now and prepare for the future.”

Throughout B.C., 35 First Nations are receiving funding through the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI), a partnership between the provincial and federal governments and the New Relationship Trust (NRT). Since 2016, the Initiative has supported over 135 projects with approximately $30 million.

Projects funded through this program include clean energy generation, energy efficiency and energy storage, helping First Nations to meet their energy needs and prepare for future needs while creating more jobs for people in their communities.
