TRU campus bird walk – TRU Newsroom

TRU campus bird walk – TRU Newsroom

May 16, 2024 at 5:56 am  Education, Kamloops, News

TRU and the Kamloops community members are invited to join TRU’s former Dean of Science and expert ornithologist, Dr. Tom Dickinson, as he leads a walk around the campus to inventory birds and identifies windows that birds are striking, often resulting in injury.

Please register for the free event at [email protected].

Registration is limited.

Date: Thursday, May 23

Time: 8 a.m. – noon

Location: TRU Horticulture Garden (free pizza will be served at noon)

Additional details:

Everyone should bring water, walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and any birding supplies they need (binoculars, etc.). Data collected from this event will provide key insight on TRU’s installation of specialty bird strike window film. The window film has a gridded dot pattern on it, which helps to prevent birds hitting windows by disrupting the window’s reflection of nearby trees and foliage. This information will be key to deciding where to continue the installation of the film.

TRU staff, faculty and students are encouraged to report any bird window strikes at any time to help with this bird preservation project, whose goal is to keep birds from smashing into campus windows. If anyone witnesses a bird striking a window or identifies the signs of a bird strike on a
window (bird carcasses next to a building or a smear with feathers on a window), please email the following details to both [email protected] and [email protected]: date, time, building (with exact location), type of bird and any other pertinent information.
