Obituary of David Lorne Greenfield

May 9, 2024 at 8:32 am  Federal, Politics

Our friend, Dave Greenfield,  former Green Party of Canada candidate, former Saskatchewan Green candidate and current Saskatchewan representative on the Federal Council of the Green Party of Canada, David Greenfield died on Thursday, April 18, 2024 after a lengthy hospitalization. He will live on in our hearts as a man dedicated to the environment, social justice, and peace. He pursued these passions through activism in political, civic, and religious groups, including the Council of Canadians, Canadian Friends Service Committee, Climate Justice Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Peace Coalition, Green Party of Canada and the Saskatchewan Green Party.

David was a long-time member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), having attended Meeting for Worship since the 1990s. He will be missed by Friends/Quakers across Canada. At David’s request, he will be cremated, and his ashes interred at Woodlawn Cemetery. A Memorial Meeting for Worship in the manner of Friends is being planned for May, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making a donation to one of the following: the Council of Canadians; Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers); Canadian Friends Service Committee; or another organization that upholds David’s concerns for environmental and social justice. Service and activism have always been key parts of his life, working for peace, environmental, and social concerns through many groups over the years.

These groups have included the Inter-Church Uranium Committee, opposing the use of uranium; supporting the Green Party and its forerunners; and he has been active in the Canadian Friends Service Committee. He currently serves Climate Justice Saskatoon, the Council of Canadians, the Saskatoon Peace Coalition and others.

Green Party of Canada leader, Elizabeth May recalls, “I first met Dave decades ago through his work against uranium mining in Saskatchewan and against nuclear power and the threats it poses, including links to the nuclear arms industry. His joy in life was evident and contagious. He played music and found the light in places where others saw only darkness. While part of the sightless community, he saw far more than those who claim perfect vision.

He will be missed. On behalf of Greens across Canada, we extend condolences to all who loved him.”

One of his supporters says “Dave is a stead-fast leader and advocate who impacted many lives during his decades of service to his community.”
