“Today’s announcement is long overdue, but a welcomed first step to protect our democratic institutions and elections. Commissioner Hogue has been clear: foreign interference in Canada requires a fulsome, timely response.

We’re in this position because successive Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to treat these threats with the urgency required to protect Canadians and our electoral system from foreign interference. Today, after months of delay, the government has finally announced they’ll move forward with a Registry of foreign agents. New Democrats have been urging them to take this step since it will help ensure accountability and transparency for Canadians and help deter foreign interference.

New Democrats will be examining the bill closely and we’ll continue to put pressure on the government to take further action so all Canadians can have full confidence in our elections.”
