NDP statement on foreign interference report « Canada’s NDP

NDP House Leader Peter Julian issued the following statement regarding the foreign interference report:

“Today’s report shows that foreign interference in Canada is real and serious. It also shows that successive Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to protect Canadians and our electoral system from foreign interference.

While this report acknowledges that our elections are fair and legitimate, it is clear that foreign interference strains Canadians’ trust in our electoral system. There is a lot of work ahead of us to restore that trust for everyone. The report also shows the chilling effect foreign interference has on many Canadian diaspora communities. There is no doubt that the federal government must do more to deter political interference from all foreign actors and keep Canadians informed about potential impacts on their democracy.

We welcome the initial findings of the report and look forward to participating in the next phase. We’ll continue to put pressure on the government to take action— they can start by immediately establishing a National Foreign Influence Registry and stronger guidelines outlining when the government should act.”
