NDP MLAs say grants will support scientific research projects at Simon Fraser University and British Columbia Institute of Technology
BURNABY – New Democrat MLAs Janet Routledge, Katrina Chen, Raj Chouhan and Anne Kang say provincial funding will support innovative and life-changing research at Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
“The remarkable researchers at our post-secondary institutions are discovering solutions to enhance the well-being of British Columbians,” said Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds. “This investment through the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund continues to support the expansion of critical research capabilities and discoveries right here in Burnaby.”
“Investing in innovative research is just one way that our government is working to strengthen our post-secondary education system,” said Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. “I am thrilled to see the results of the research being supported at SFU and BCIT through this funding.”
At SFU, the following projects are receiving funding:
- The Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment Demonstrator, $1,000,000
- Ecocosms and Mesocosms Jointly Predict Ocean Weather and Ecological Response (EMPOWER), $490,000
At BCIT, researchers are receiving $1,011,000 to support a project that will investigate and improve on new wheelchair technologies to help people move better and faster.
“There is so much about our universe that we don’t know yet,” said Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed. “This investment will support the exciting work of SFU researchers to learn more about our world and beyond.”
“B.C. is committed to innovation in accessibility for people with disabilities,” said Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “I look forward to seeing how this BCIT research project can help improve the lives of people who use mobility devices.”
These grants are provided through the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund, which helps grow the economy by improving B.C.’s productivity and competitiveness. This year, the provincial government is providing more than $52 million to support infrastructure for 25 research projects at five post-secondary institutions.
