Lightning-caused wildfires accounted for 59 per cent of Canada’s 6,700 ignitions in 2023, but led to about 90 per cent of the area burned, study finds. “Everything was kind of off the charts,” said wildfire expert Dr. Mike Flannigan, one of the study’s co-authors. “That’s four to five per cent of [Canada’s] forest burned.” Read more
