OTTAWA — As the humanitarian and political crisis in Haiti worsens, New Democrats called on the Liberal government to respond to the wishes of the Haitian Canadian community and establish special immigration measures, repatriate Canadians stranded in Haiti, and play a leadership role in ending this crisis.

“Haitian Canadians are telling us they are devastated by this worsening crisis and terrified for their loved ones,” said NDP Immigration critic Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East). “We are calling on Canada to establish special immigration measures and ensure that resources are mobilized with urgency to ensure Haitian Canadians can bring their immediate family members to safety in Canada.”

Haitian Canadians have also been asking for Canada to play a leadership role in ending the crisis.

“New Democrats asked for an urgent briefing on the situation at the Foreign Affairs Committee last week, and it is now clearer than ever that any role Canada plays must prioritize finding a Haitian-led solution to this crisis, and ensuring Haitians are at the table, especially women,” said the NDP’s Foreign Affairs critic, Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona). “Canada should significantly increase funding to humanitarian partners working on the ground in Haiti, who are trying to save lives and ensure basic health needs are met in one of the most challenging environments in the world.”

Many Haitian Canadians, particularly the community in Québec, have appealed to Canada to help repatriate stranded Canadians and do more to end the violence.

“The Liberal government needs to listen to the Haitian community and show real solidarity that is respectful and focused on their needs and that will bring a real democratic solution to this terrible situation,” said NDP Deputy Leader Alexandre Boulerice (Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie). “Haitian Canadians are worried about their loved ones and the future of Haiti. Canada must step up, show leadership and help immediate family members to reunite safely.”
