Climate Change Affects Dragon Boat Team Plans for 2024 Season

Kamloops Interior Dragons (KIDS) 55+ dragon boat team plans to begin practices April 16, 2024 despite record low water levels on the Thompson River. They will draw on experience gained in the fall of 2023 when water levels dropped below the boat launch level to thread a path to the water until spring runoff makes launching less challenging. Contingency plans are in place to change or cancel practice times in the event of extreme heat or smoke to protect the health and safety of participants.

KIDS obtained funding from Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund for club merchandise and supplies in advance of the 2024 season. Plans are underway to compete in several dragon boat festivals throughout the summer including the BC55+ Games to be held September, 2024 in Salmon Arm and Sicamous.

The co-ed team, open to people 55 or older, begins practices April 16, 2024 from the Pioneer Park dragon boat compound. The team is also offering 2 free introductory sessions in partnership with City of Kamloops “Give it a try” programming on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 4:30 or 6:00 p.m.
