MLAs Routledge, Kang and Chen say delivering new affordable homes funded by provincial government will help renters

BURNABY – New Democrat MLAs Janet Routledge, Anne Kang and Katrina Chen say that funding announced today will deliver much-needed affordable rentals to the community to help those with moderate and low incomes find homes that fit their budgets.

“The housing crisis is hitting people with low and moderate incomes especially hard,” says Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “These new rental homes will make a difference to people in Burnaby, helping more people to find a decent home in the community they love.”

In Burnaby, the following organizations had successful Community Housing Fund applications:

  • Action Line Housing Society, 48 units
  • The New Vista Society, 118 units
  • M’akola Housing Society, 66 units

“The Community Housing Fund is a key part of the action we’re taking to deliver affordable housing faster,” says Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. “These 232 new rental homes mean more people will benefit from affordable housing right here in Burnaby.”

“Building more housing in partnership with M’akola Housing Society is part of our commitment to supporting Indigenous communities,” says Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed. “As we continue to expand affordable housing options, we’re fostering environments where everyone can thrive and feel a sense of belonging.”

The CHF is a $3.3-billion investment to build more than 20,000 affordable rental homes for people with moderate and low incomes by 2031-32.

Projects were prioritized based on several criteria, including prioritized populations and the effect the project would have in addressing the community’s affordable rental housing need.
