MLA Jennifer Rice says delivering new affordable homes funded by provincial government will help renters
BELLA COOLA – New Democrat MLA Jennifer Rice says that funding announced today will deliver much-needed affordable rentals to the community to help those with moderate and low incomes find homes that fit their budgets.
“We know that Indigenous communities often face disproportionate barriers to accessing affordable and adequate housing, as well as additional barriers that face all people that live in our remote coastal communities,” says Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast. “That’s why this funding specifically for Nuxalk elders is so critical, and I am so proud of this partnership with Nuxalk Nation and other BC Housing projects along the North Coast that are making housing in our coastal communities more accessible.”
In Bella Coola, the Nuxalk Nation is building 20 homes for Indigenous Elders, through a partnership with the Building BC: Community Housing Fund (CHF).
The CHF is a $3.3-billion investment to build more than 20,000 affordable rental homes for people with moderate and low incomes by 2031-32.
Projects were prioritized based on several criteria, including prioritized populations and the effect the project would have in addressing the community’s affordable rental housing need.
