MLA Rankin welcomes funding for modern, efficient sewage infrastructure in Oak Bay

OAK BAY – New Democrat MLA Murray Rankin is welcoming a joint federal, provincial, and municipal investment announced today to modernize and improve stormwater and wastewater treatment infrastructure in Oak Bay.

“For years, people in Oak Bay have told me how important it is for our sewage infrastructure to be improved,” said Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “This investment is a great example of how all levels of government can work together to make our water treatment systems better for our community and the environment we live in.”

This investment of $8.8 million comes from the federal and provincial governments and the Municipality of Oak Bay, with $2.94 million coming from the province. This project will improve both stormwater and wastewater management by separating combined sewer systems primarily in the Uplands neighbourhood. Currently, these systems can be susceptible to overflow which can cause problems for the community and environment.

This project is funded in part by the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) which has funded almost 100 projects in British Columbia so far, with over $463 million from the federal government and over $305 million from the provincial government.
