NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

MLAs Pam Alexis and Bob D’Eith say funding will help grow local music industry in Mission

February 7, 2024 at 4:03 pm  Politics, Provincial

MISSION – MLAs Pam Alexis and Bob D’Eith say that funding announced today will help B.C.-based musicians to develop their careers and grow the local music industry.

“We use art to make sense of the world, to connect with each other, and to brighten our days,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission. “I am always amazed by the talent here in the Fraser Valley and across the province and I’m glad these dedicated artists are being recognized. I can’t wait to see more great B.C. talent in 2024!”

Over $3.3 million is being distributed to hundreds of artists and companies for career development, live music events, business development, industry initiatives, and attracting out-of-province talent to record in B.C.

Mission and Abbotsford recipients include:

Career development stream:

  • Kristin Witko – $8,000.00
  • Katie Sly – $8,000.00
  • Becca Hess – $8,000.00

Music industry initiatives stream:

  • Mission Folk Music Festival Society – $20,000.00

“Music is a powerful form of creative and cultural expression,” said Bob D’Eith, Parliamentary Secretary for Arts and Film and MLA for Maple Ridge – Mission. “I am excited to see the amazing things that recipients of the Amplify BC grants will achieve and create with this support. We look forward to showcasing our talent at marquee events such as the 2025 Juno Awards in Vancouver.”

More than 200 musicians and music companies will benefit from this funding, which is part of the New Democrat government’s $7.5 million investment in 2023 to develop and support musician’s careers and promote the music industry here in B.C. This is one of the many ways the government is supporting creative industries and creative professionals in the province.
